American wheel

In roulette there are two types are roulette wheel. There’s the American wheel and the European wheel. It’s important that players are able to distinguish between these wheels as they work differently. The American wheel has a total of 38 numbers. European wheels on the other hand, have 37 numbers in total. Another significant difference is that the American wheel has a 00 slot. This means that there is the option to place 5 number bets.

Colour bet

This is a term which is used to refer to a type of bet wherein a player bets on whether the ball will fall on either red or black.

Column bet

This is a commonly used term for a type of bet in which a player bets on a grouping of 12 numbers arranged in a column. Regardless of whether a player is playing at an American or European table there are three columns to choose from.  This is a great bet for beginners to place as it has a payout of 2:1 on average.

Corner bet

This is term that is used to describe a type of a bet where a player places money on one of the points where four numbers meet, hence the name of this type of bet. This is also known as a 4-way bet. These bets generally have a payout of 8:1 on average.

Croupier

This is the term that should be used to describe the casino employees who are responsible for operating the roulette wheel. They are often, incorrectly, referred to as dealers.

Dozen bet

This is the term used for a type of bet where a player can choose to bet on one of three groups of 12 numbers. These groupings include 1 – 12; 13 – 24 and 25 – 36. The odds of winning with such a bet aren’t too high.

European Wheel

This is the term used to describe a roulette wheel which has 37 slots. These include slots numbered from 1 to 36. There is also only one zero unlike in an American roulette wheel.

Even- odd bet

This is the term for a type of bet in which the player places money on either even or odd numbers.

Five number bet

This is the term used for a type of bet in which a player put money on a combination of five numbers found in this string:  0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. It isn’t a very common bet as it’s only possible in American roulette and because the house has such an advantage. Many players avoid this bet as with only one possible betting combination possible a player’s options are very limited.  This is an inside bet and is sometimes also referred to as a top line bet.

High-low bet

This is the term used to describe a type of bet in which a player bets on either a high or low number.  High numbers include numbers from 19 – 36 while low numbers are number from 1 to 18. This bet has a payout of 1 to 1.

House advantage

This is a commonly used term and is something a new player should always keep in mind. It’s used to describe the chances that the house or casino has of winning over the player. With most casino games, the casino has an advantage over the player.

Inside bet

This is a term used to describe any bets which are placed on a number positioned on the inside of the table. There are 6 different inside bets a player can place. These include straight-up, street, split, corner, six line and trio. Inside bets generally pay out more than outside bets but a player has a smaller chance of winning at an inside bet.

Outside bet

An outside bet refers to a bet which is placed on any of the numbers on the outside of the table. There are also 6 different outside bets a player can place. These include 1 to 18; 19 to 36; red or black; even or odd; dozen bets and column bets. These bets have a lower payout then inside bets but a player has better odds of winning.

Split bet

This is a term used to describe a bet in which a player has the option to bet on two consecutive numbers. It is for this reason that is bet is also referred to as the two number bet. Also, it’s important for player to keep in mind that this bet cannot be placed on any two random numbers. The numbers need to be neighbouring numbers.

Straight up bet

This is a term used to describe a bet in which a player places money on one number. Players can generally place as many of these bets as they want. The limits on straight bets vary from casino to casino. This is one of the simplest of all the inside bets a player can make.

Trio bet

This is the term used to describe a bet where a player places money on three different numbers.

Having a good understanding of these essential roulette terms is crucial to becoming a skilled roulette player. New players don’t need to overwhelm themselves with the many roulette terms that exist.
