Different types of roulette bets

Different types of roulette betsAs you may have found with other casino games, mastering any game from slots to blackjack requires more than just practice.

You need an in depth understanding of the inner workings of the game. And if you’re serious about making money as roulette player there’s not a second to waste. There are tons of things to learn from the essential roulette terminology to roulette table etiquette.

For those who have mastered the basics and are looking for something to supplement their understanding of the game, it might be useful to work on different types of roulette bets. A firm grasp of roulette bets gives a player more options and increases the player’s chances of winning.

There are two main types of roulette bets. These include inside bets and outside bets. As the name indicates, inside bets are placed on the inner part of the table where numbers are found. It is important to, therefore note, that inside bets are placed on numbers.

Unlike inside bets, with outside bets one can place money on colours as well as factors such as whether or not the number will be even or odd. While these bets tend to payout less than an inside bet a player has a greater chance of winning with an outside bet than an inside bet. There are many different types of roulette bets all of which are either inside or outside bets. In total, there are 11 different roulette bets.

Inside bets are hard to win on but the payouts make them worth the effort. Generally these bets are placed on a single number or on a combination of six different numbers.  Inside bets also vary in American and European roulette. In European roulette there are five inside bets while American roulette includes the five inside bets that can be found in European roulette as well as an inside bet unique to American roulette.

1. The straight up bet

This is a bet which is placed on one number. Players do have the option to place several of these bets in a game. A player who wishes to place this kind of bet would place his/her chips on the number that is being bet.

A player’s chances of winning on this kind of bet are higher with European roulette than with American. In both versions there is a payout ratio of 35 to 1.

2. Split bet

This is a bet which is placed on two adjacent numbers. These numbers can either be connected vertically or horizontally. The payout ratio for this bet type is 17 to 1.  Examples of number combinations one could bet on include 14-17 and 8-9. To place a split bet, a player would place the desired amount of chips on the line between the two numbers.

3. Street bet

With a street bet, a player is placing money on any three numbers which can be found arranged horizontally on the same line.  To place such a bet, a player would place the amount of chips s/he wants to bet at the end of line on which the bet is being placed.

4. Corner bet

As the name of this bet suggests, a corner bet is a bet where a player bets on the intersection of four numbers.  These could include 11- 12- 14-15, for example. To place such a bet, a player would place chips on the meeting point of the four numbers.

5. Double street bet

This bet, also known as a six line best, is made on six numbers. These are not any random numbers, however. With this bet one places one’s money on two horizontal lines of three numbers each which are adjacent to one another.

6.Top line bet

This bet, also referred to as a five line bet, is only to be found in American roulette. As the name of this bet indicates, with this bet a player places money on five numbers. These numbers include 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. To place this bet a player would place chips on the point where 0 and 1 intersect or where 00 and 3 intersect.

Inside bets are seen to be the more risky bets. They do have a higher payout and so if a player knows how to play the game they can be very rewarding. Inexperienced players should be cautious and careful not to blow all their gambling money in one shot. For a new player, the best option is to rely on a mixture of inside and outside bets.

Outside bets are seen to be far less risky. They do, however, have a lower payout. But for new players outside bets are a good place to start. Outside bets are placed outside the numbered area, hence the name of this bet. There are many different types of outside bets.

1. High low bets

With these bets a player can choose to bet on low or high numbers. Low numbers are numbers from 1 to 18 while high numbers are numbers from 19 to 36.

2. Odd-even bets

With these bets a player has the option to place money on either an odd or an even number. Players need to keep in mind that zeros are always counted in the houses favour. To place a bet, a player places chips in either the odds or evens box.

3. Red-black bet

With this bet a player places money on whether the ball will land on a red or a black number. Since there is an number amount of red and black numbers the chances of the ball landing on either colour are equal. This is one of the most common bets as its simple to place and understand. To place this bet a player will place chips in either a red or black diamond shaped box on the roulette table.

4. Columns

This is a bet which is placed on one of three columns of 12 number groupings. Many people mistake this bet for an inside bet. To place this bet a player should put the chips just below the final number in the column.

5. Dozens

This is a bet which is similar to the columns bet in many ways. With this bet a player bets on one of three groups of 12 numbers. These groupings are 1-12; 13-24 and 25-36.

It’s a good idea to have an understanding of how these different bets work before playing. The rules, odds and pay-outs are different for each bet type. Players also need to familiarize themselves with where to place their chips for various bets.  While this may seem like a lot to take in, with practice these bets will become intuitive and something a player doesn’t need to think about. Good luck.
