Understanding Roulette

Online Roulette While Roulette may not seem like one of the most complicated casino games around it’s not to be underestimated. Skill and strategy are needed to be an effective Roulette player.

Roulette, which is French for little wheel is all about the spinning of wheels. After players have placed their bets, the croupier will spin the Roulette wheel. At the same time there is a metal ball which the croupier also spins just in the opposite direction and along a track on the wheel. The idea is that once the ball begins to slow down, it will fall from the track and into one of the wheels slots thus determining the winning slot. In Roulette players have many options when it comes to betting. They can put money on one number or a range of different numbers. Players also have the option to bet on whether the ball will fall in a red of black slot and if the number will be odd or even.

Before playing Roulette, it can be useful to have an understanding of the history of the game. It is believed that the game has been around since 1796. However, even before that there were more primitive versions of the game in existence. In the 1600s, for example, Blaise Pascal, a French scientist, while working on a perpetual motion experiment created a more basic form of the game. There is also a mention of the game in a novel from 1801, La Roulette, ou le Jour.

The origin of the single Roulette wheel has been attributed to Francois and Louis Blanc. It is believed that they created the wheel to compete with the more traditional wheels being used in most casinos of that time. And like any good game, this one isn’t without its legends. Some say that Francois Blanc made a deal with the devil as all the numbers on his Roulette wheel add up to the devil’s number, 666.

There are also American style Roulette wheels which can found clearly depicted in a gambling book from the early 19th century. The interesting thing about these wheels is that they featured an American Eagle slot supposedly representative of American liberty. However, while this nationalistic slot added a certain element of pride to the game, they didn’t last and were soon replaced with all numbered slots we’ve come to know in modern day Roulette.

Gradually the popularity of the game grew in both the US and Europe, reaching its peak in the 19th century.  However, the game did face opposition from some governments and it, along with all other forms of gambling, was eventually banned in Germany. This sparked a series of events which saw the Blanca family establish a casino in Monte Carlo. As a result of this, the single “o” Roulette wheel became the worldwide game of choice, except in the states where the double Roulette wheel remained popular.

The double Roulette wheels, often referred to as the American wheels, are commonly found throughout the US, Caribbean as well as South America. While the wheels which are often referred to as the European/ French wheels, the single Roulette wheel, are more popular and can be found everywhere else.

The history of Roulette is interesting and helps put the game in its historical context. It will not, however, help a player win. For that, a player needs a good understanding of the inner workings of the gamer. Every Roulette table, whether its’ American or European, will have what is know as a “layout” this is the area where bets are placed. In American Roulette tables, the betting area will consist of both a single “o” and a double “o” slots.  A European/ French table, on the other hand, will simply consist of a single “o” slot. Simply by being able to identify these features, players will know which type of Roulette table they’re dealing with.

Other important differences to note between the two tables, involve the pockets. Both tables consist if wheels numbered from 1 to 36. For the most part these are arranged in a similar way for example in the both the American and European/ French tables, odd numbers will be in red pockets while the even numbers will be in black pockets. The difference however, involves the green pocket. A player should note that on a European/ French Roulette wheel there is one green “o” pocket while American Roulette wheels have the a green “o” pocket as well as a green “00” pocket.

When it comes to betting, things can get a little complicated as a player has a number of choices. Firstly, players can choose to place an inside bet. This means they are betting on the number the ball will fall on or numbers within a limited proximity of where the ball will land. There is also the option to place an outside bet.  Such a bet is more open and the player can choose to put money on a group of numbers, whether the color the ball will land on will be red or black or whether it will be an odd or even number.  There are often different rules regarding these two types of bets.

The position the ball lands in is marked by the croupier using what is referred to as a dolly. When the dolly is in place on the table, no more bets can be made. Before betting can continue, the croupier will award the winning players and take away chips from players who have lost. Once this has been done and the dolly has been removed, play can continue and players are free to place more bets.

When it comes to placing bets, there are various different betting combinations a player needs to know. For example, there is the Straight-up which is when the bet is placed on a single number. This is considered an inside bet. But there are many other types of inside bets. For example a player could decide to place a bet known as a Split. This means that a player is betting on two numbers which border each other, either horizontally or vertically. As far as outside bets go, there are also a range of options.  A player can place a red or black bet meaning that they would be betting that the ball will land on either a red or black slot. A player can also place a bet on a range of numbers either from 1 to 18 or 19 to 26. Other outside bets include what is known as Dozen Bets. With this bet, the winner bets that the ball will land in one of three number groupings either: 1 – 12; 13- 24; 25 – 36.

While not accepted at all casinos, there are those that will allow what is known as a Call Bet. With such a bet, a player can place a bet by simply calling the bet out. No money needs to be placed on the table. A player should check with the casino as for example, many casinos in the UK do not accept call bets.

There are also different bets associated with special parts of the Roulette wheel.  For example there is the Zero Spiel bet. This is a bet on a range of numbers in the Zero Spiel sector of the wheel, i.e. the range of numbers closest to zero such as 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32 and 15.  Players can also place what is known as a Voisins de Zéro, or “Grand Voisins du Zéro” bet and refers to the section of the Roulette wheel between 22 and 25. Other special bets include Orphelins which include the following range of numbers: 17, 34, 6 and 1, 20, 14, 31, 9. There is a bet known as Le tiers du cyclinder or in English Thirds of the wheel.  This involves the range of numbers between 27 and 33.  An interesting bet which is only offered in European/ French Roulette is known as a Final Bet. This is a bet on one number but includes all combinations of that number for example if the bet is Final 2 then the bet includes 2, 12, 22 and 32.

Roulette is a game which requires a good understanding of different betting strategies. Players should have a firm grasp of not only how to play but when to choose which kind of bet before approaching the table.  But once you’ve got the hang of it, its game with endless thrills.
